Briarwood Farms was started in 1964 by Curtis and Ann Long. We first purchased 150 acres and Briarwood now consists of 1535 acres (approximately 150 acres of corn land and 1400 acres of permanent pasture and hay). We bale about 1500 large round bales per year.

We purchased our first pure-bred Angus cow from John Thomas, a long time Bates County resident. These cows were very large and productive for their time. This started the foundation of our herd. We were the first in the state of Missouri to import Wye Foundation bulls. Our first Wye bull, Pastor of Wye, sired over 700 calves naturally. We also used Lurch of Wye; Courage of Wye - a Francis son; and Favorite of Wye. Following this we used many AI sires from popular blood lines including the traveler line and recently outstanding carcass genetic bulls in the last 20 years. We purchased Briarwood Muscleman in the R&J Dispersion Sale. This was one of the first 15 square inch loin eye bulls sired by Finks High Yield out of a Jodi cow. The foundation of muscle and excellent rib eyes in Briarwood date back to the early use 25 years ago of Briarwood Muscleman. Our bulls consistently average over 15 square inch loin eye and the breed average is 12.5. Our cattle consistently grade 80-90% Choice and 30-40% CAB. We breed approximately 50-60% of our cow herd AI and put in approximately 30 embryos per year.

We cooperate and help many beef associations and the Missouri Angus Association. We were one of the first members of US Premium Beef and past president of the Missouri Angus Association. We support many Angus programs. Several years ago we started Briarwood Farms Awards at the Missouri State Fair, 4H and FFA Angus Steer Show both on foot and carcass. We have given over $2000.00 worth of awards yearly in the State of Missouri to Junior 4H and FFA members at the Missouri State Fair. We also sponsor the carcass show at the National Junior Heifer Show and have given away numerous awards at the National Junior Heifer Show starting in 2008. We also cook for several local community charity events including the County Fair and several church programs.

Our annual sale and open house is held the second weekend in March each year. We consistently have 35 bulls and 25-35 females in our Spring Open House and Sale. Our sale this year will be March 14 & 15.
      Hope to see you then!

Dr. Curtis & Ann Long moved to Butler, Missouri in 1964, where Doc began practicing medicine at the same clinic he is still associated with today. He was raised in Festus, Missouri, and attended University of Missouri, Columbia, where he graduated in 1956 with a degree in agricultural biochemistry. He began medical school, working summer vacations for his father at the Twin City Packing Company, and purchasing cattle for East Street Stock Yard.
Ann was raised in Macon, Mississippi and attended Mississippi College for Women, graduating in 1956. She began teaching physical education in Festus where she met Doc on a blind date. They married in 1958, and Ann taught at Stephens College while Doc completed medical school.

They began building the herd of registered Angus cattle when they moved to the Butler area. They raised two sons on the farm, who grew up showing Briarwood cattle as well as an assortment of other livestock the boys were interested in.

The farm has been a gathering place for years for many family gatherings for the wide-spread Long family. Doc loves taking the young ones out and showing them the farm and animals.
